In Fairfield County, 40,000 children are eligible to receive free and reduced price meals at school. On the weekends, however, they do not have this resource available to them.
Many will not have access to nutritious food essential to growing bodies and minds. On Mondays, they return to school with headaches, dizziness, fatigue and a lack of concentration. They are too hungry to focus in the classroom.
The Connecticut Food Bank's Kid's Backpack program is a simple solution. Each Friday, school staff discreetly tuck a bag of food for the weekend into children's backpacks. The shelf-stable, healthy food items provide meals and snacks for the weekend.
Now, twice as many children will have weekend food
The Foundation worked with 14 of our donors, raising $124,000 for the Kids' Backpack program. This donation more than doubled the number of Bridgeport students receiving food, with 900 children now heading home with healthy meals.
